Acne is the term for plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and cysts. These blemishes may occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. Acne affects most teenagers to some extent. Acne is not limited to any given age group; adults in their 20s, and even into their 40s, can get acne. Untreated acne can leave lifelong scars and take a toll on your day-to-day life.
Control of acne is a continuing process. All acne treatments work by preventing new acne while existing blemishes must heal on their own. Improvement takes time.
No matter what special treatments your physician may use, remember that you must continue proper skin care until the acne flare ups are completely gone. There is no instant or permanent cure for acne, but controlled and proper treatment may prevent scars.
