DON'T FRY DAY IS COMING

Be ready for the summer sun

May 19, 2010 5:07 AM

To help reduce rising rates of skin cancer from overexposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun, the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has designated the Friday before Memorial Day, May 28, 2010, as “Don’t Fry Day” to encourage sun safety awareness and to remind everyone to protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors.

Sun Safety Facts:
  • UV intensity peaks in June making May a month with greater risk of sunburn than August
  • The recommended adult dose for sunscreen is one ounce per application to cover the entire body surface. Most people apply only 25% of the recommended dose of sunscreen and never reapply. This effectively reduces sun protection by 75 to 100%
  • 80% of children report summer sunburns
  • Proper sun protection is important
  • Sun protection clothing including hats and long sleeve shirts may protect better than sunscreen
  • Always wear sunglasses to protect the eye from UV damage.
